This is a vast facility used for major shows. Acts and events such as Eric Clapton, Elton John, Aerosmith and Lollapalooza perform here.

Experience the 1864 Civil War Battle of Atlanta, reproduced via painting in a revolving theater.


An intimate outdoor amphitheater hosts concerts under the stars from May to October. Big name performers are featured. It’s hard to get tickets, so order as far in advance as possible. Bring a small table, bottle of wine, picnic baskets, and candles. This is one of the most romantic finds in Atlanta. A must see!!!!

Fox Theatre (Midtown)

This theater was originally built in 1929. The Moorish design includes an auditorium with twinkling stars and clouds. In addition to concerts and musicals, this venue hosts the NationsBank summer film festival. Approximately a dozen films are shown from June through August. The shows include vintage cartoons, a sing along organ concert and a feature film for about $5.50.

Forty acres of wet, splashy fun can be found at one of the largest water theme parks in the south.

Geat improvisation comedy Thursday- Sunday. Call first to confirm the night’s schedule; go early and buy your tickets because seating is done according to the numbered card you are given. The theatre is tiered platforms filled with couches. No seat is a bad one because the room is quite small; a bar and tables are out front. The entertainment lasts a few hours and requires the crowd to get involved in the show—you will definitely laugh a lot. Parking is available across the street, but be sure to feed the meter because the parking patrol does check.

Atlanta is the home of many professional athletic teams. From the World Champion Braves to a resurgent Hawks basketball team, you can always find great sports action. Atlanta is also host to many tennis tournaments and the nationally known BellSouth Classic golf tournament in the Spring.

Atlanta Sports & Fitness and Creative Loafing are both free publications and excellent sources for detailed information on activities such as rafting/floating outfitters, local hiking trails, public tennis courts, organized sports associations & club teams, upcoming biking/blading/running races and lots of other good ‘stuff.’ Listed below is a limited selection of outdoor recreation options. Whether you’re a weekend warrior or an aspiring marathoner, Atlanta has the club for you. Also stop by the Woodruff P.E. Center to see if Emory has a club sport that fits your interest.

Public Golf Courses
Call for details, but these are the top & relatively affordable picks of some our MBA pros.

Atlanta International Golf & Country Club
(27 hole championship course) - 4601 Snapfinger Woods Drive; 770/981-1400. Directions: I-20 East to Exit 36, turn left & cross I-20, immediate right to Snapfinger Woods, drive 500 yards, course is on the left.

Bobby Jones Municipal
(18 holes) - 404/355-1009. City of Atlanta course, run by the American Golf Company. Conditions are usually pretty poor and the play is slow, but it is close and cheap.

Browns Mill Golf Course
(18 holes) – 480 Cleveland Ave., 404/366-3573. Another municipal golf course. Greens fees are cheap ($10 for city of Atlanta residents, $14 for everyone else on the weekends).

Candler Park Municipal Golf Course
(18 holes) – 585 Candler Park Dr., 404/371-1260. A round of golf will only cost you $5 (with student ID), and the course is groomed accordingly. Still, it’s cheaper than the range.

Lakeside Golf Club
(18 holes) - Old Fairburn Road; 404/344-3629. Directions: I-285 West to Exit 3, go West on Campcreek Parkway, turn left on Old Fairburn Road.

The Oaks Course
(18 holes) – 1124 Brown Bridge Road, Covington;. 770/786-3801. Directions: I-20 east to Exit 44, turn right & go two miles.

North Fulton
(18 holes) – W. Wieuca Rd., (near Chastain Park), Atlanta, 404/255-0723. Directions: Peachtree Rd. to Wieuca Rd. (at Phipps Plaza). Veer right onto W. Wieuca, cross Roswell Rd., course is on left). An American Golf Corporation, City of Atlanta course. Greens fees are around $20 and carts cost $10 extra.

Stone Mountain
(36 holes) 770/498-5717. One of Atlanta’s nicer public courses. Greens fees are $40-50. Take Route 78 to the Stone Mountain Parkway and follow the signs for the park.

White Columns Golf Club
(18 holes) 300 White Columns Drive, off Freemanville Road, Crabapple; 770/343-9025. Voted the “Best Public Golf Course” in Atlanta by Atlanta magazine, and ranked among the 10 best in the country by Golf Digest and Golf magazine.

PARKS

Callaway Gardens
Dining, biking, fishing, tennis, skiing, beaches and hiking trails located in Pine Mountain, Georgia. Call 1/800/628-8582 or access www.callawaygardens.com.

Kennesaw Mountain/National Battlefield Park

Enjoy 16 miles of extensive hiking trails and beautiful scenery. Trail maps available at the Visitors Center.

Lake Lanier
a 38,000 acre reservoir about 30 minutes north of downtown Atlanta. Great place to ski, swim, sail, camp and picnic. Check out Lake Lanier Islands Park.

Piedmont Park
Entrance on Piedmont Avenue at 14th Street in Midtown. The city’s most popular recreation area was once a farm and a Civil War encampment. The park has a varied terrain of rolling hillsides, green lawns, and lush forest around Lake Clara Meer. Hosts jazz and symphony concerts, art and music festivals, marathons, etc. Walk your dog and stop for a beer at The Park Tavern. Perfect for running/blading/strolling and people watching (try Skate Escape on Piedmont for blade rentals). The park has soccer & softball fields, as well as a great view of Atlanta’s skyline.

Stone Mountain Park
6867 Memorial Drive, Stone Mountain (16 miles east of downtown on US 78)
Covers 3,200 acres of lakes and beautiful wooded parkland. Centered in the park is the world’s largest mass of exposed granite where a Civil War mural has been carved. On a clear day, hike to the top of the mountain for a view of the area. Check out the Lasershow, a display of lights and fireworks with animation and music.

White Water Rafting
O n the scenic Chattooga River in North Georgia and the Ocoee in Tennessee (Olympic venue) Put-in points for both rivers are about a two-hour drive. Call Southeastern Expeditions 404/329-0433.

Lenox Square Mall
D epartment stores include Macy’s, Neiman Marcus, & Rich’s; also many specialty retailers such as The Gap, Banana Republic, J. Crew, Brooks Brothers, jewelry shops, Crate & Barrel; food court, restaurants and cinema. 3393 Peachtree Rd. at Lenox Rd. Mon.-Sat. 10-9:30; Sun. 12:30- 5:30. 404/233-6767.

Phipps Plaza
T hree stories with 200 shops, cinema, restaurants & food court, including Saks Fifth Ave., Lord & Taylor, Abercrombie & Fitch, Tiffany’s, Gucci, NikeTown & specialty stores. Located at Peachtree & Lenox Rds. Mon-Sat 10:00-9:00; Sun noon-5:30. This mall is very upscale, but has the AMC theaters that give great student discounts!

Loehmann’s Plaza
V ery convenient to Emory. Has: Eckerd Drugs, Loehmann’s, a drive-through drycleaners, and several quick/cheap places to eat--- Lettuce Souprise You, Le Peep, Grady’s and TCBY. Located on the corner of Briarcliff and North Druid Hills Rd.

The Mall at Peachtree Center
More than 80 stores & restaurants are located in this open-air plaza surrounded by office towers. 225 Peachtree St. Mon-Sat 10:00-6:00; Sun. noon-5:30, but hours can vary. 404/614-5000.

North DeKalb Mall
O ne story “mall” with Rich’s, The Gap, & many random shops, food court and the new cinema. Located at Lawrenceville Highway & N. Druid Hills Rd. Not a very upscale mall, but has the advantage of easy parking compared to Lenox and Phipps.

Northlake Mall
Department stores include Macy’s & Parisian. 4800 Briarcliff Rd. Mon-Sat 10:00-9:30; Sun 12:30-5:30. 404/938-5483. Further out in the suburbs.


SMALLER SHOPS NEAR EMORY

At the intersection of Clairmont & N. Decatur Rds. you’ll find four shopping centers; one on each corner. In addition to the stores below, you’ll find several drugstores, a bike shop, photo finishing, and a laundromat.

Emory Commons
Has a Publix Grocery Store, Blockbuster Video, Chapter 11 Bookstore, The Sports Shoe, dry cleaners, and several take-out restaurants

North Decatur Plaza
Has a few hidden treasures including the Mexican Gourmet, serving inexpensive & decent Mexican food, sometimes live music and always a friendly staff; Rainbow Natural Foods Store has great all-natural packaged goods and freshly prepared food for take-out or sit-down at the tiny restaurant in the back; and a Baskin Robbins ice cream store.

Emory Promenade
Has Los Loros Mexican restaurant and My Thai (a favorite of business school students), a Pizza Hut, a nail salon, and Stanley H. Kaplan test preparation service.

Sage Hills
You will find Harris Teeter grocery store, Eckerd drugs, Post Office, Jonathan Lee’s Chinese restaurant, Blockbuster Video.

Toco Hills
An extensive area with Pike’s plant nursery, Kroger grocery store, shoe repair, bars, hardware stores, bank, fast food, liquor store, restaurants.

Dekalb Farmer’s Market
