Planning Your Video Conferencing

There are two types of Video conferences (also called Video Teleconferences or VTC):

  1. ISDN – ISDN uses several high capacity telephony lines. It can be very expensive, often six to 10 times more expensive than a long distance phone call. Whoever initiates the call pays for it. Video and audio quality is very good with ISDN calls, depending on how many ISDN lines the far end (the other person/people in your videoconference) utilize. If you want to involve more that one site, bridging fees may be incurred. These typically are a few hundred dollars for an hour session.

Rooms with ISDN capability: 208, 331, 130, 500, W100, W131, W300, W320, W330, & W403.  Our portable unit resides in room W403 and that space works well for 1 or two person VTCs.  Room 208 has a multi-camera, microphone at each seat integrated video conference system.

  2. IP – IP uses our computer network to transmit video and audio. There is essentially no cost involved. However, video is much lower in quality and audio is poor and often drops out. Connections are less reliable. We strongly recommend using a conference telephone for audio and the IP connection for video. Rooms with IP capability: All spaces in building with network jacks.
