Windows 2000/XP VPN Connection Guide

Before Beginning:
• Have your Windows 2000/XP installation CD available.

IMPORTANT:
Recognize that, in all instances, a VPN connection is significantly slower than a typical connection, and your connection speed needs to be greater than a 56KB modem (DSL, IDSN, or cable modem). 56KB modems - or slower - are not recommended, as just the connect time could take up to 15 minutes.

2-Step Access Procedure:

Step A. Install the Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP)

1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to Communications, point to Network & Dial-up Connections.
2. Double-click Make New Connection.
3. In the Network Connection Wizard, click Next.
4. Select Connect to a Private Network Through the Internet, and then click Next.
5. In the Host name or IP address box, type vpn.bus.emory.edu and then click Next.
6. Select Only for myself, and then click Next.
7. In the Type the Name You Want to Use for this Connection box, type GBSVPN and then click Finish.
An icon for your VPN connection (labeled GBSVPN) is created in your Dial-up Networking menu.

Step B. Connect to the VPN

(This step requires making two separate connections.)

1. First, make one connection to Emory University, or an Internet Service Provider, using your normal connection procedure.
2. Next, make a second connection to the VPN:
3. Double-click on the GBSVPN icon created during the vpn installation procedure.
4. Type bus.emory.edu\ in front of your userid.
5. Enter your password.
6. The password you will enter is the password normally used with your userid to log into the GBSNET on campus.
7. Click Connect.
